EAST-EETT3  Press Releases

September 29, 2005 - Press Release by Mike Garofalo

The Corning Union Elementary School District is pleased to announce that it will accept a grant of $202,800 from the State of California Department of Education to implement an Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) grant at the Maywood Middle School from 2005-2007.  Teachers and staff at the Maywood Middle School applied for this highly competitive grant.

Two science teachers at Maywood Middle School, Mrs. Farmer and Mr. Dillon, will use advanced computer hardware and software applications to provide enhanced learning opportunities for students and to deliver the science curriculum.  The EETT grant will provide funds for each teacher to receive 30 days of specialized professional training, and for staff to build an advanced technology computer laboratory in Room 9 at Maywood School.  A variety of special classes and training using this new technology will be available for 7th and 8th grade students.

The Maywood Middle School science teachers will work in partnership with the Environment and Spatial Technology (EAST) Initiative from Arkansas. The EAST educational model is student-centered. It has been recognized nationally as an innovative, relevant, and successful approach to education. At Maywood School, the EAST model will be used to develop project-based, service-learning science classes that will provide students with the most current, high-end technologies available in some of the most progressive fields in the world. EAST and Maywood School teachers will team in a coordinated attempt to provide today's Maywood students with an educational atmosphere that will allow them to gain insight into their own abilities to acquire and use information, solve problems, and gain valuable experience on their way to becoming life-long learners. For educators, EAST provides an opportunity professional development and provides additional tools to enable them to continue to focus on the strengths and develop the weaknesses of individual students. EAST classrooms are for all students.

To develop as learners for a new era, Maywood School students will be equipped with the tools of the future. They will routinely interact with EAST specified hardware and software in animation, computer aided design, engineering design, visualization, database design, webpage design, programming, office automation, digital film making, virtual reality, global positioning systems, and geographic information systems. The science students, working in teams, will tackle sophisticated service-oriented projects. In the process of solving these problems, they will learn to become creative, intuitive, adaptable learners who can solve unpredictable, real-world problems.
